The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has issued a powerful denial and a curse-laden warning against those spreading marijuana-smoking allegations—a claim that has recently gone viral.

In a widely circulated video recorded during a public gathering, the monarch addressed the rumors head-on. He dismissed them as fabrications and declared that anyone peddling such falsehoods would face divine retribution. “They are lying against me. They are unfortunate people. Unless I’m smoking marijuana—if I’m a smoker—may God remove me from this throne,” he stated emphatically. “You who are accusing me of being a smoker, God will punish you.” 

Oba Akanbi’s defiant response arrives on the heels of a significant court ruling that affirmed his position as the paramount ruler of Iwoland. The Court of Appeal recently upheld his enthronement, an outcome he praised as a divine victory confirming his authority and legitimacy. 

While denial may have sufficed for many, the Oluwo chose a more dramatic rebuke—invoking both spiritual accountability and royal dignity. This is hardly surprising for a monarch in Yoruba culture, where reputation and moral conduct are closely tied to authority and tradition.

Oba Akanbi’s reign has already been marked by controversy. He was once suspended by the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers following a physical altercation with another monarch. Furthermore, years ago, a video—widely circulated on social media—purportedly showed him rolling a joint. That clip added fuel to the fire, and now these marijuana rumors have resurfaced with new momentum.
