A 30-year-old woman, Mercy Michael, has been remanded in a correctional facility by a chief magistrates' court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, for allegedly killing her eight-month-old daughter using rat poison.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) charged Mercy with culpable homicide, a crime that violates Section 189 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
The Incident
According to the NSCDC prosecutor, Mr. Marcus Audu, the case was first reported by one Godfrey Sunday of Fadia Bakut, Zonkwa, on December 11. He stated that the tragic incident happened a day earlier, on December 10, when Mercy reportedly fed her baby with rat poison for reasons that remain unclear.
The baby was rushed to the General Hospital in Zonkwa for medical attention but sadly passed away the following day, December 11.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The case was initially reported to the Salama Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Kafanchan but was later handed over to the NSCDC for further investigation.
During the court hearing, the presiding judge, Mr. Samson Kwasu, declined to take the plea of the accused, citing the court's lack of jurisdiction over the case. He directed the prosecutor to send the case file to the Kaduna State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
Judge Kwasu then adjourned the case to December 19 for further mention.
Public Reactions
The case has sparked widespread reactions among members of the public, with many expressing shock and outrage.
"How can a mother do such a thing to her child? This is beyond comprehension," a resident in Zonkwa remarked.
Another person stated, "This is heartbreaking. Mental health issues might be a factor, and I hope a thorough investigation is conducted."
Some called for swift justice, saying, "Such an act must not go unpunished to deter others from committing similar crimes."
Others, however, called for deeper reflection on societal issues. A commentator suggested, "This tragedy highlights the importance of addressing economic hardship, mental health challenges, and support systems for vulnerable individuals."
As the case unfolds, it continues to draw attention and raise questions about the underlying circumstances that led to this tragic event.
